Flowering Plum (Prunus cerasifera Nigra)

Prunus nigra is a striking ornamental tree with dark purple-black foliage on upright, spreading branches. In spring it produces masses of delicate single pink flowers with prominent stamens, creating a beautiful display. The tree also bears small rounded fruit (cherry plums) and features dark brown bark and deep red twigs for year-round interest. Growing to 5m tall and 4m wide, it is frost tolerant and ideal as a feature tree in well-drained, well-worked soil. Water well until established, fertilize at planting and after new growth, and prune after flowering to encourage healthy outward growth.
