Canistel (Yellow Sapote)

Canistel, also known as Eggfruit, is a tropical fruit tree renowned for its distinctive appearance and creamy, sweet flavour. Scientifically classified as Pouteria campechiana, Canistel belongs to the Sapotaceae family and is native to southern Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. The fruit is oval-shaped, with a smooth, yellow-orange skin and firm, creamy flesh that resembles the texture of a hard-boiled egg, hence its colloquial name “Eggfruit.” When ripe, Canistel fruit offers a sweet, custard-like flavour with hints of pumpkin and sweet potato, making it a delicious and unique treat. Canistels are often added as a flavouring to sweet desserts, sweet custards. Also makes a delicious milk shakes by blending with milk.
